Agate Fossil Beds National Monument
Agate Fossil Beds National Monument is one of of the nation's most rewarding fossil sites. Located near Chadron, the park consists of over 11,000 acres of grass-covered plains and fossil beds consisting of mammals that are over 20 million years old.
See the remains of prehistoric creatures like the bear dog, pony-sized rhinoceros, a horse ancestor, and ancient land beavers. At the visitors' center, catch exhibits on the life in the Miocene Epoch alongside a collection of Lakota and Red Cloud Indian artifacts. Outside, the area offers numerous informed walking trails through the fossil beds and the chance to see great plains wildflowers blooming in action.
