Scotts Bluff National Monument
Highlighting an important landmark on the historic Oregon Trail, Scotts Bluff National Monument can be found northwest of Sidney. The monument is named for the the prominent namesake bluff, which rises 800 feet over the prairie landscape, and was a popular area for fur traders, covered wagon settlers, missionaries, and the military in the 19th century.
Today, the monument is home to a museum, a collection of art, and interpretive programs. Drivers will want to take the Summit Road, a mile-and-a-half drive covering scenic views and tunnels through the bluffs, while hikers are free to explore overlook trails. Afterwards, don't miss living history exhibits featuring covered wagon players and be sure to visit the Oregon Trail Museum and Visitors Center.
