Where will you start on your getaway in the Cornhusker State? Nebraska visitors have a full menu of outdoor activities; no matter what season they happen to be visiting. Outdoor enthusiasts have plenty to do throughout Nebraska, so start packing.
Head to western Nebraska for the town of Chadron, home to the lively Chadron State Park. There you can hike, bike and fish the day away. Stay in Chadron, or make the trip to Ogallala for horseback riding, golf, and water skiing on Lake McConaughy. More park action is found in Grand Island, home to Eagle Scout Park, or get a great view of outdoor Nebraska from the observatory tower at Yanney Heritage Park in Kearney.
Western Nebraska:
Set in northwestern Nebraska, the city of Chadron is an outdoor lovers paradise. Located just north of Nebraska National Forest, Chadron plays host to a number of recreational activities, many of which found at Chadron State Park – less than 10 miles south of town.
This Nebraska state park is nearly 10,000 acres of stunning outdoor scenery. Part of the Nebraska National Forest, Chadron State Park offers incredible hiking, fishing, and boating. Check out the many multipurpose trails – right after a visit to the onsite mountain bike rentals – and bike, hike or horseback your way through the Nebraska wilderness. Pack a lunch and enjoy some family time at one of the picnic areas, or head back to town for a comfortable night at the Best Western hotel in Chadron.
A three-hour drive south of the Chadron State Park brings you to the beautiful city of Ogallala – another staple of outdoor Nebraska. A former stop along the Pony Express in the days of the frontier, Ogallala is a western town with plenty to do in the out-of-doors. Brought your clubs? Head to the West Wind Golf Course or the Bayside Golf Course, or saddle up for a day with Eagle Canyon Horseback Adventures – an appropriate activity when visiting this honky-tonk town.
Just north of Ogallala is Lake McConaughy, a perfect summer spot for fans of fishing, water skiing, swimming, and even scuba diving. After your day splashing around Lake McConaughy, dry off at the Best Western hotel in Ogallala.
Central Nebraska:
Found in south-central Nebraska, the city of Grand Island has a full itinerary ready for those willing to step outside. Golfers may choose from several courses in town, including Indianhead Golf Course and Jackrabbit Run Golf Course. Less than an hour west of Grand Island is the fun-loving city of Kearney. Hometown of the University of Nebraska-Kearney, this city offers an abundance of outdoor activity.
